6th President of Somaliland
December 2024 - Present
LEADING SOMALILAND FORWARD
Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, widely known as Abdirahman Irro, is a prominent political figure and the current President of the Republic of Somaliland. His journey to the presidency is marked by dedication to public service, parliamentary leadership, and the pursuit of democratic governance. As a leader with decades of experience in both diplomacy and politics, Irro's rise reflects the resilience and aspirations of the people of Somaliland.
Early Life and Education
Abdirahman Irro was born in 1955 in Hargeisa, the capital of present-day Somaliland. He hailed from a well-respected family and grew up in a society undergoing rapid political and social changes. Irro pursued his early education in Somaliland before continuing his higher studies abroad. He later obtained qualifications in political science and international relations, preparing him for a life of diplomacy and governance.
Following the collapse of Somalia’s central government in 1991 and the subsequent declaration of Somaliland's independence, Irro returned home and took an active role in rebuilding his homeland. He became a key figure in Somaliland’s democratization process and was elected to the House of Representatives in 2005 under the UCID party (Justice and Welfare Party). He was later chosen as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, a position he held with distinction for over a decade (2005–2017). As Speaker, Irro played a pivotal role in shaping Somaliland’s legislative framework, encouraging dialogue, and maintaining political stability in a region marked by fragility.
