HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
From independence to democratic leadership in the Horn of Africa
The Republic of Somaliland declared independence on May 18, 1991, following the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic. Since then, Somaliland has maintained peace, stability, and democratic governance while seeking international recognition. Established strong institutions and maintained territorial integrity while building diplomatic relationships worldwide.
